Fiddleworks has been in existence for 13 years, first as a socially minded sole proprietorship (1999-2006) and incorporating as a non profit society in 2006. During this time we have organized 12 very successful Fiddle Camps on Salt Spring Island in addition to many other wonderful community building activities in BC and the Northwest Territiories. Fiddleworks regularly hosts Barn Dances, one day workshops, weekend jamborees and musical performances. We also sub-contracts music administration services to other music organizations to help them get music events started in their communities.
We are expanding our work through the collaborative development, creation, and implementation of creative educational programs which use music to develop leadership, teamwork, self esteem, and life skills. Our goal is to provide accessible, affordable music education for children and adults delivered with heart and skill by dedicated professionals.
Northern work
Zavallennahh, founder of Fiddleworks, and many other highly skilled instructors who are part of the "Fiddleworks Family" travel to remote communities in the far North 4-5 times a year to instruct at fiddle events for Native children. Much of this work is made possible through the Kole Crook Fiddle Association; in the communities we work alongside the school system and the local band office's Recreation programs in delivering semi-private and group lessons to interested students--of which there are many! We also bring donated instruments and strings and do basic repairs on the instruments that are already up there. This work in the NT is very important and is constantly being expanded; some children in the North have few opportunities, and learning to play the fiddle teaches valuable life skills and is a powerful tool of self expression. The fiddle is a bridge between old and new, having links to their traditional culture and is an important instrument in the music of our time. The planned distance education program will allow Northern students to interact with a skilled instructor on a regular basis, get feedback on their playing, and access high quality education regardless of their location.
